Personal Safety and Security Recommendations

Keep you and your personal belongings safe by following these simple safeguards for any environment.

At home:

  • If leaving your residence, advise friends and family where you will be going, who you will be with and for how long.
  • Before leaving home, lock up your personal possessions, like your iPod™. You can protect your iPod with the new iCage™ locking devices found at Masterlockitup.com.
  • Before you go to bed, make sure all windows and doors are locked. Visit Masterdoorlock.com for door security products, and to learn more about our exclusive NightWatch™ deadbolts (NightWatch Video). Use the Master Lock® Security Bar on patio and sliding doors for added protection. To view the security bar video, click here Door Security Bar.

On campus, at the gym or in public:

  • Secure your gym or school locker with a Master Lock Password Plus™ combination lock, where you customize the passcode to something easy for you to remember. Choose your color at Masterlockitup.com.
  • At the gym, choose a locker close to traffic and visible from the showers or the gym itself. Avoid lockers in isolated locations, with no visibility from the public areas.
  • Keep a safety device on you at all times, like pepper spray or a personal safety alarm system.
  • Report suspicious people or activities to campus or local police.
  • Check into your school’s safety program and, if available, use the escort service or provided transportation, especially at night.
  • Don’t display large amounts of cash, jewelry, or expensive apparel, all of which are a theft target.
  • Carry your purse in front of you and secure it tightly to your body. Evaluate if it’s necessary to carry one at all.
  • When searching for off-campus housing, evaluate the environment during both day and night settings. Identify the location of emergency phones and note which nearby businesses are open late at night.
  • Take a self defense class or practice what to do if you’re approached by a stranger.

Commuting or traveling:

  • Place valuable possessions, including electronics, backpacks, and purses out of sight or in the trunk when leaving your car.
  • If a suspicious car or person follows you, don’t proceed to your destination, but instead, head to the nearest police station or call the police.
  • Try carpooling - it saves money and it’s safer.
  • Securely lock up your bike in designated areas. Visit Masterlockbike.com to find the right cable lock or U-bar for your bike. Check out videos on Master Lock’s exclusive Python™ or Street Cuff®.
  • Park in well-lit, busy areas. Visit Masterlock.com to learn about a variety of vehicle security products, including steering wheel locks and towing devices. Also, visit Mastersentryseries.com for the Auto Sentry™ Wireless Anti-theft system.
  • During air travel, secure your luggage with a Master Lock TSA-accepted lock which allows TSA screeners to open the lock, inspect the bag and relock without damaging the lock. Visit Masterlocktsa.com.

At an office or study area:

  • When leaving a work station or computer lab, take all valuables with you, especially your iPod, cell phone, USB drive, etc. Secure these in your backpack or briefcase with Master Lock’s Lock & Leash™ backpack lock. Learn more at Masterlock.com.
  • Don’t leave backpacks, textbooks and study tools unattended in study halls, libraries, dorms or classrooms. Use book covers on textbooks or place your name on the inside cover to deter thieves who might attempt to resell your books. Secure these items in your backpack and anchor the backpack to a fixed object with the Lock & Leash™ backpack locking cable. Check it out at Masterlock.com.

Out with friends:

  • When walking to and from an evening event, walk with others; if alone, pay attention to your surroundings and walk purposefully with awareness.
  • When at a social event, don’t leave your drink unattended, even for a short period of time.
  • Don’t do anything that makes you uncomfortable; trust your instincts and react to them.
  • Safety on Campus Inc reports that 90% of campus crimes are alcohol related. Watch out for one another when going to evening events.
  • Limit the confidential information you provide on social networks such as Facebook and Myspace to limit a strangers’ ability to track your every move.
