On Campus, At the Gym or In Public

  1. Secure your gym or school locker with a Master Lock Password Plus™ combination lock, where you customize the passcode to something easy for you to remember. Choose your color at Masterlockitup.com.
  2. At the gym, choose a locker close to traffic and visible from the showers or the gym itself. Avoid lockers in isolated locations, with no visibility from the public areas.
  3. Keep a safety device on you at all times, like pepper spray or a personal safety alarm system.
  4. Report suspicious people or activities to campus or local police.
  5. Check into your school’s safety program and, if available, use the escort service or provided transportation, especially at night.
  6. Don’t display large amounts of cash, jewelry, or expensive apparel, all of which are a theft target.
  7. Carry your purse in front of you and secure it tightly to your body. Evaluate if it’s necessary to carry one at all.
  8. When searching for off-campus housing, evaluate the environment during both day and night settings. Identify the location of emergency phones and note which nearby businesses are open late at night.
  9. Take a self defense class or practice what to do if you’re approached by a stranger.
